How recipe cost is calculated

Ingredient cost = pack price ÷ pack quantity × quantity used. Add all ingredient costs to find the batch total. Divide the total by the servings actually produced to get ingredient cost per serving.

A 1,000 g pack of cheese costing $8.00 contributes $1.92 when the recipe uses 240 g. The default six-ingredient example totals $9.40 for eight portions: $9.40 ÷ 8 = $1.175, displayed as $1.18.

Calculations retain precision until display. CSV values use up to six decimal places. A displayed total may therefore differ slightly from a sum of individually rounded display figures.

Keep the result useful

  • Convert pack and recipe quantities to the same unit before entering them.
  • Measure the usable quantity required when trimming or preparation causes waste.
  • Use actual portion yields and current supplier prices.
  • Include every ingredient; omitted rows understate the result.
  • Keep labor, overhead and other costs separate when planning a selling price.

Questions about this calculator

What is the recipe cost formula?

For each ingredient, divide the pack price by the pack quantity and multiply by the quantity used. Add the ingredient costs for the batch, then divide by the number of servings. The quantities must use the same unit.

Does this calculator include labor and profit?

No. It shows ingredient cost and optional packaging only. Labor, overhead, taxes, payment fees and profit are not included, so the result is not a recommended selling price.

Can I save the result in Google Sheets or Excel?

Download the CSV and import or open it in your spreadsheet app. It contains your input values and calculated totals, not a live linked workbook or formulas.

Where are my ingredient prices stored?

The calculator uses the values in this browser tab and does not save or send them to SheetChief. Download a CSV before closing or refreshing the page if you want to keep the result.
