UGC Portfolio With No Experience: A Sample Project You Can Build

You can start a UGC portfolio with no paid experience by making self-directed samples that show how you plan, film and edit. Label them clearly as practice work. This guide takes one fictional brief from an idea to a finished portfolio entry, so you have a concrete project to work on.

Choose a task you can demonstrate honestly

Begin with an ordinary product you already own and understand. Pick one visible task: keeping charging cables on a desk, organizing a drawer or showing how a calendar view works. A demonstration gives the viewer something concrete to evaluate without relying on invented customer results.

Write down what you can actually show. For desk cable clips, that might be placing a cable into a slot, removing it with one hand and showing the finished desk. Avoid claims about durability, safety or performance that your footage cannot establish. You are practicing a production workflow, not inventing a brand endorsement.

Use this original practice brief

The following is a fictional exercise created for this guide. Adapt it to an item you own; no purchase is required.

Example brief: a tidier charging spot
Brief itemYour project
AudienceSomeone who charges a phone at a small desk
SituationThe charging cable slips behind the desk between uses
ObjectiveShow one way to keep the cable within reach
DeliverableOne vertical demonstration, roughly 20–30 seconds, with captions
OpeningA close-up of the cable falling out of reach
DemonstrationPlace the cable in the clip, remove it and return it
FinishShow the desk with the charging end accessible
Portfolio labelSelf-directed product demonstration; not commissioned by the brand

The duration is a practice constraint, not a universal platform requirement. Your goal is to make the sequence understandable within the time you choose.

Turn the brief into five shots

  1. Establish the problem: film the cable slipping behind the desk.
  2. Introduce the item: show the clip close enough to understand its shape.
  3. Show the action: record placing and removing the cable in one clear view.
  4. Show the result: use the same desk angle as the opening.
  5. Close the sequence: show the phone being plugged in, then a short closing caption.

Keep a second take of the demonstration. Check focus and sound while filming instead of discovering a problem after clearing the desk. Use your own footage and audio you have permission to include.

Review what a stranger can understand

Watch the edit once without sound and once with sound. Give each of these checks a pass or a revision note:

  • The opening identifies one situation immediately.
  • The demonstration remains visible while captions are on screen.
  • The sequence shows the result it describes.
  • Voiceover is intelligible and music does not obscure it.
  • Captions are readable on a phone.
  • The example contains no invented results, testimonials or partnerships.

This is a production checklist, not a prediction of views or sales. If the action is hard to follow, fix that before adding transitions. Save the revision note with the project so you can explain what you changed.

Write the portfolio entry around your contribution

A useful entry might read: Desk cable organizer — self-directed demo. Concept, filming, voiceover, captions and editing by me. Objective: demonstrate a simple charging setup. Deliverable: one 25-second vertical sample. Created for practice; no brand commission or performance results.

Put that description beside the playable example. It tells a prospective client what you contributed without presenting practice work as a paid campaign. Leave out a client-logo strip until you have permission and a real relationship to describe. Do not fill an empty results section with hypothetical conversion figures.

Make the next sample prove a different skill

After the first project, choose a second format that adds evidence: a voiceover sequence, a screen-recorded walkthrough or a direct-to-camera explanation. Keep the subject close enough to your intended niche that the collection feels coherent. A third sample can show how you approach a different opening for the same task.

Billo’s own creator onboarding encourages creators to add video examples alongside their pitch. That is a useful reminder to prioritize watchable work over a long biography. Platform requirements vary, so review the current instructions of any platform you apply to.

Place your examples in a shareable Canva portfolio

For the overall page structure, use our UGC portfolio and brand proposal checklist. Keep a short introduction, your examples, services and a clear contact route. Canva’s publishing guidance distinguishes Website designs from other design types; choose the format that produces the experience you want, then test the published link on a phone.

Download the plain-text practice brief and replace its example with your own. This worksheet is a free planning aid, separate from the paid template.

Questions, answered

Can I make a UGC portfolio without paying for products?

Start with an item or app you already use and can demonstrate accurately. The sample brief can be adapted to everyday objects; a new purchase is not part of the exercise.

How should I label practice UGC samples?

Use a clear label such as self-directed sample or practice project. State your contribution and do not imply that the brand commissioned or endorsed the work.

Should a beginner portfolio include campaign results?

Only include results you can substantiate and appropriately share. For self-directed practice, describe the objective, creative choices and deliverable instead.
